Santiam Spokes is a recreational bicycling club for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Generally we're low-key. We like to ride, but we are happy also to go slowly and enjoy the wonderful biking roads in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon. We look after each other on rides and try to be sure that everyone is having fun. We welcome new and experienced riders. Regularly we offer a Discovering Bicycling Class that helps you get off the sofa and into the fun of bicycling. We have special rides that take us to wineries or cemeteries, on ferries or overnight camping, up steep hills, or week-long tours. We ride to festivals and celebrate the beauty of our countryside. Mostly our rides are moderate on the many routes we have mapped in the Willamette Valley. However, we do some climbing and fast rides that are strenuous and challenging. Six of our members have ridden across the United States. Almost every summer we have a week-long, camping w/sag club tour. This has to be the lowest cost bike tour in the state. Since 1992, each June we produce the Strawberry Century tour, a premier event to initiate summer. Riders say this is the best run tour in Oregon; the Strawberry is becoming more popular every year. We also help community by conducting bicycling clinics for children, donating helmets and other safety gear, and other activities to further responsible bicycling by youth and adults. Our club meetings are at 7:00 PM on the first Thursday of each month at Lebanon Community Hospital. Our newsletters are in area bike shops. Pick up a copy. We have several parties and gatherings each year. There's plenty of room and fun! Ride with us!(Membership Application) |
The public is invited to a presentation by Doug Robin and Donna Short of Sweet Home focusing on their extensive tour of Europe by bicycle during the summer of 2011. They will present slides and tell about the first half of their tour. They will cover the remainder of their tour in another presentation on March 1. Doug Robin and Donna Short have been touring by bike together since 2003. Prior to that, Doug did a number of solo tours in the 1970’s and 80’s with self-made panniers on a Peugeot PX10 with skinny tires. They have toured the Puget Sound area several times and have done the Pacific Coast route from Vancouver, BC to San Francisco, CA. In the summer of 2007 they crossed the US following Highway 20 from Newport, OR to Boston, MA. It was a good “practice” long distance/multi-month adventure that helped prepare them for last summer European sojourn. They started in Lisbon, crossed Portugal into Spain, wandered up the Mediterranean coast to the Rhone River, and followed it up the middle of France, arriving in Paris in time for the final stage of the Tour de France. After that they continued on to Switzerland, then followed the Rhine River through France and Germany to The Netherlands, ultimately completing a loop around much of the country before ending in Amsterdam. In addition to Santiam Spokes, Doug and Donna are also currently members of the Willamette Backcountry Ski Patrol, past members of the Crater Lake Ski Patrol and have shared many adventures skiing, hiking and climbing in the Cascades over the years. |
